Based in Iceland, a country with a long history of geothermal utilization, ÍSOR has played a central role in the exploration, assessment, and sustainable development of geothermal energy for more than 80 years. ÍSOR operates as an independent research institute and trusted advisor, supporting geothermal developers, governments, utility companies, and international organizations in the responsible development of both high- and low-temperature geothermal resources.
Flexible Couplings
Downhole logging data from Icelandic high-temperature geothermal wells has revealed casing failures in approximately one out of every four wells, with around one in ten wells showing evidence of casing tensile failure. These failures are often caused by constrained thermal expansion of cemented casings, which damages the casing material and can ultimately lead to severe structural failure.
The patented Flexible Coupling addresses this problem by allowing controlled expansion and movement of each casing joint, rather than generating excessive thermal forces within the well structure. By accommodating thermal expansion, the system improves well integrity, increases structural reliability, and significantly enhances the likelihood of long-term project success, potentially saving millions in investment costs and future revenues.
