Today, ÍSOR and the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme welcomed Valérie Levkov, Vice President for Infrastructure at the World Bank Group. Her visit to Iceland is organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and during her stay she will meet several of the key players in the Icelandic geothermal sector.
At the meeting, staff from ÍSOR and the Geothermal Training Programme presented the history and development of geothermal utilisation in Iceland and the important role geothermal energy has played in improving quality of life and supporting the country's social and economic development.
Iceland's contribution to the development of geothermal utilisation worldwide was also discussed, not least through the work of the GRÓ GTP Geothermal Training Programme. Since the school was founded, nearly nine hundred participants from numerous countries have completed six-month specialised training there, and thousands have attended its shorter courses. In this way, Icelandic knowledge and experience of geothermal energy has been put to use around the world, building expertise and supporting sustainable geothermal utilisation.
Close and effective cooperation between Iceland and the World Bank can play an important role in the continued development and spread of geothermal utilisation worldwide. It was therefore a particular pleasure for ÍSOR and the Geothermal Training Programme to welcome Valérie Levkov and to have a valuable conversation with her about the opportunities and future of geothermal energy.
