Mikil áhersla er á nýsköpun, rannsóknir og þróun innan ÍSOR. Á hverju ári tekur ÍSOR þátt í mörgum rannsóknarverkefnum. Verkefnin eru ýmist styrkt af orkufyrirtækjum og eða innlendum og erlendum rannsóknarsjóðum, eins og af sjóðum Evrópusambandsins og jarðhitaklasanum GEORG. ÍSOR nýtir þátttöku í styrktarverkefnum, til að efla eigin rannsóknarfærni og til að afla grunnþekkingar á sviði jarðvísinda og jarðhita. Hér að neðan er listi yfir nokkur rannsóknarverkefni.
